I think my favorite part of the holidays are the months leading up to it. It’s all about building suspense and creating surprises. Then comes the days leading up to it which are basically a mad dash to finish everything up (all those half finished project in my case….) before the big day. Finally theres the point of being finished with all the little odds and ends and FINALLY getting a chance to sit down on the couch with a cup of coffee, a sleepy baby, and a Christmas movie when BOOM! you gotta get up, get ready, and drive house to house visiting family. By the time Christmas and New Years is over I feel like I need a vacation for my holiday vacation! By the time it was over I was definitely ready and I think I needed to get back into my routine almost as bad as Jax did.
Normally I am not excited for a Monday, but I was ready to get back to our daily life, and our Monday ended up being perfect! Due to the fact that neither of us knew which way was up when it came to sleeping we ended up taking long naps and snuggling together on the couch the entire day.
Dad on the other hand had to go into the office so he didn’t get to ease into the work week as lazily as we did. However, he did leave the house in sweatpants! One of the perks of working for family. So at least he was as comfy as us!
For our first evening back to normal after the holidays (and the first day we have seen snow so far this year! Crazy for Ohio) I thought it was only fitting to have some comfort food. I have so many memories of my family serving this dish throughout the years. We would make big pots of it at a time so that we would have plenty for later. Once when I was younger I even got a chance to have some with the women who started all the memories, my great grand mother. When she was making it for her kids she would go into the back yard, “grab the plumpest chicken”, and prepare it on the spot. Luckily for me, and my childhood memories, she did not do this when I had dinner with her. And lucky for me, no one expects this from me, haha. Especially since this dish isn’t exactly suitable for my vegetarian diet.
So instead of going into the backyard I headed to the market…
